Caliphate (TV series)
Caliphate is a strained eight-part drama series, which was made available globally on Netflix on March 18. The story shows how ISIS recruiters organize youngsters from disadvantaged and deprived families, mostly with a migrant background, who are stuck between two worlds (but without religious background). These adolescents feel that the only way out of a stalemate for them is to escape into an idealized and utopian world.
The series is written by Wilhelm Behrman and Niklas Rockström and directed by Goran Kapetanović.
Caliphate is not only a drama, but also an exciting thriller that moves seamlessly between the apparent calm of Sweden and the turmoil in Syria.
The series depicts the leaders of the Islamic State in an extremely lifelike fashion. They are depicted as bloodthirsty fanatics for whom women are nothing more than worthless trinkets and are willing to sacrifice anyone, and anything, for their "cause". The series doesn’t just contrast different civilizations but also presents the struggle of the worlds within Islam itself.
With contrasting the so-called representatives of moderate Islam (or simply Islam) with the followers of extremist or fundamentalist Islam, the creators showed their detailed research done before creating the series. They didn't only incorporate the usual clichés into the story. This allowed us to get to know more aspects of the issue after viewing the eight episodes.
